Marissa Meyer

Write-Minded is delving into this new decade with an exploration of fan fiction and a fun and insightful interview with the amazing and prolific Marissa Meyer. Grant and Brooke look back to some of their favorite fairy tales from childhood, and Marissa speaks about her inspiration, her stockpile of story ideas, and how she once wrote 150,000 in the month of November for NaNoWriMo—which may well be a record (for which Grant offers extra credit).

ABOUT MARISSA MEYER

Marissa Meyer is the #1 New York Times-bestselling author of The Renegades Trilogy, Heartless, and The Lunar Chronicles. She lives in Tacoma, Washington, with her husband and twin daughters. She’s a fan of most things geeky (Sailor Moon, Firefly, any occasion that requires a costume), and has been in love with fairy tales since she was a child. She may or may not be a cyborg.

The Takeaway: Be Marissa Meyer For a Day

This is a fanfic exercise. Take a character from a favorite fairy tale and write the prequel or the sequel to the actual fairy tale. That’s it. You can interpret the fairy tale any way you like. You can write it quite literally within the world it exists in, or you can add elements of other genres, just as Marissa injected her storyworlds with sci-fi. One thing that’s great about fairy tales is that they’re short, so write this as flash fiction, meaning it should be a story under 1,000 words.
